Free Concert of Sacred Music
Ruth Cunningham brings her classically trained musical talents and sound healing practices to the monastery church of the Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand, Indiana, to perform Light & Shadow: Chants, Prayers and Improvisations on October 27, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. EDT.
Cunningham, a member of the women’s vocal quartet Anonymous 4, combines her skills to improvise music that connects people to the healing and spiritual power of music. This solo concert utilizes her training as a singer, flute player, and sound healer, plus her love of improvisation, the modes and medieval music, and the different spiritual traditions she has engaged over the years.
There is a very strong improvisational aspect to the entire program, so it will never be the same.
Cunningham says, “Music and sound profoundly affect the body and emotions of the people listening. It can transport you. I look at the whole experience of this concert as a journey.”
There is no charge for the concert; a free will offering is welcome. This is the third annual concert of the Sisters of St. Benedict’s Mechtilde of Hackeborn Sacred Music Series, supported through an endowment established by the Verkamp Family in honor of Sister Mary Aquin and Sister Mary Ann Verkamp.
