Second Sunday of Advent

Readings:

  • Isaiah 11:1-10

  • Romans 15: 4-9

  • Matthew 3: 1-12

Isaiah's foretelling of the Messiah speaks of a time of peace and justice.  Images of a time when the lion will lie down with the lamb and children will play in the cobra's den seem beyond our understanding.

The call of John the Baptist to "Reform our Lives!" stands in stark contrast to the longing we feel at this time of the year for home, comfort and security.  John leaves all behind home, security, shelter to bring his message of the Messiah to all who would listen.

You and I find ourselves jarred from our complacency with the stark realization that this Advent Season there is unrest, war, poverty, inequity, and injustice.

Yet, St. Paul tells us that "every thing written before our time was written for our instruction, that we might derive hope from the lessons of patience and the words of encouragement in the Scriptures."

The challenges of our times do call us to live in the tension of the reality of our world and the sure and certain hope of God's grace in our lives. The hope for a better world as envisioned by Isaiah points to the time when we live the true Gospel message of peace. John tells us the path to this life is by changing our hearts.

We come to face squarely that our world needs to look to the coming of our Savior. Only in the power of Jesus are we able to bring together the fragments of our world, the fragments of our lives and know true peace.  May God bless us with hearts open to this Advent message.

Reflection Questions:

  • What is your hope for a better world?

  • How does my heart to change so I can know true peace?

Prayer:

God of Hope,

Change my heart so that I may be a messenger of peace and hope to others in our world this day.
