Prayer All prayer is rooted in the Word of God. God speaks through the Word and we are called to listen and respond. Thus, prayer is a conversation with God, a way of deepening our relationship. Everyone is called to be in relationship with God. In ancient times, prayer was defined as a dialogue of the soul with God. Our relationship with God will transform us if we approach sacred scripture and all of life with the ear of our hearts. St. Benedict encourages anyone who wishes to live the Christian life to "listen with the ear of their hearts." As Sisters of St. Benedict, we begin and end each day by listening together and praising God as we pray the Liturgy of the Hours, more commonly known as the Divine Office. The Liturgy of the hours consists of the reading of scripture with a particular emphasis on the Psalms. We are also called to listen with the "ear of our hearts" in the daily activities of our lives. To help us become more aware of God's presence and to grow in our relationship with God, we spend time each day in private prayer, Lectio Divina. Lectio Divina is the reading and reflecting on sacred scripture. We also spend time in spiritual reading.
